Would Someone Who Weighs 370 Pounds Be Able To Safely Lose Weight While Pregnant??

November 22nd, 2009 by Leave a reply »

I would think so, seeing that’s a huge risk to the baby, being so morbidly obese – I mean, it couldn’t hurt right?? I look as if I weigh 250, but when I was 220, I looked as if I weighed 150…it’s hard to explain, Im just one of those who carry their weight very well….my doctor said that I retain alot of water, and said he think 60+ pounds is water… how do I flush my system without taking diuretics and if I am pregnant what’s a safe way to shed some weight in the next 9 months without straining the baby??

If you are just starting an exercise program as a way of improving your health during your pregnancy, you should start very slowly and be careful not to over exert yourself.
Listen to your body. Your body will naturally give you signals that it is time to reduce the level of exercise you perform.
Never exercise to the point of exhaustion or breathlessness. This is a sign that your baby and your body cannot get the oxygen supply it needs.
Wear comfortable exercise footwear that gives strong ankle and arch support.
Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of fluids during exercise.
Avoid exercise in extremely hot weather.
Avoid rocky terrain or unstable ground when running or cycling. Your joints are more lax in pregnancy and ankle sprains and other injuries may occur.
Contact sports should be avoided during pregnancy.
Weight training should emphasize improving tone, especially in the upper body and abdominal area. Avoid lifting weights above your head and using weights that strain the lower back muscles.
During the second and third trimesters, avoid exercise that involves laying flat on your back, as this decreases blood flow to your womb.
Include relaxation and stretching before and after your exercise program.
Eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and complex carbohydrates.
    Good luck

My doctor says that he usually recomend that women who come in really over weight lose weight while they are pregnant. But If you are pregant, I don’t think you should only eat once a day. That will only make your body think that you are staving it and will hold on to whatever you do put in it. If you eat often then your metabolism will be higher. Look, I lost weight while I was pregnant by eating healthy and eating often and I wasn’t even overweight. I was concerned about the weight loss and that is when my dr. said that he actually recomends overweight mothers-to-be lose weight. But not my starving yourself. A drop in blood sugar is not good for your baby.

you really need to work with a dietician. speak to your doctor because losing weight also releases a lot of toxins and you already have some serious risk factors for both of you. Please work this out with the doc and don’t try to guess your way thru…

pregnancy is not the time to focus on losing weight. You can do that afterwards. As for the water retaining back off salts and soda and still to just the water and some milk. If it is high in sodium don’t eat or drink it. You can excercise like take walks and such while pregnant and get your body into a better shape to make it easier to lose weight after baby comes. If you do decide you want to try to get a handle on weight gain (no loseing it just slowing the gain) then talk to your Dr about it and maybe you can see a nutritionist which can help you learn how to eat properly while pregnant. You still have to get so many calories during pregnancy for baby to grow. Good luck.

speaking as an overweight woman (and I totally know what you mean about not looking your weight, I’m the same way, thank goodness), you will probably lose weight while pregnant anyway. You body will want to use your natural fat stores to nourish the baby. Eat sensible (2000 calories a day max) and you can safely lose alot of weight!!! I lost over 35 lbs with my frist baby, and came home from the hospital at my highschool graduation weight!

ultimately loosing weight is not the best thing to do while pregnant, whoever you can do things to maintain your weight, walking and doing pregnancy excercies off video tapes for one…second would be to drink lots of water and eat the right thing…fruits veggies, etc…

I also am heavier than I look. I guess because I am muscular and muscle weighs more than fat. When I went to my first OB appt, I asked about healthy weight gain. I am currently 225. He told me that he was going to tell me something that no woman wants to hear but that it was his job to tell me. He said you are overweight and you should not gain weight during this pregnancy. You need to eat healthy and by doing that, you will likely lose some weight (without trying). He said that if I want to have a healthy baby and cut out many risks that I have to start making good choices now. I held back the tears until I got out of the office. I cried for two hours in my car in the parking lot, I sucked it up and decided that he was right. I have lost about 5 lbs while still eating 1800 calories a day – just making sure its a good 1800 calories.
You can do it — just make smart decisions. I know it not about overeating. And by eating one meal a day – you will not lose weight because your body will go into starvation mode and will hold onto all your fat. Plus one meal a day is not healthy for your child.
Keep your head up and do the right thing. I know you can do it! Best of luck!

I know that you aren’t supposed to diet or try to lose weight when you’re pregnant. I know that with my first I lost 10 pounds the first trimester, but that’s because of bad m/s.
I would talk to your dr about it, but I don’t think he will tell you it’s a good idea to lose weight right now. If you want to work on your fitness, I would try to get into a walking routine, even if it’s just 15 minutes a day. I don’t think that would hurt anything, as long as you don’t overdo it.

It would gave been best at that weight to have tried to lose some weight before conceiving. There is a very good chance you will have gestational diabetes which could be harmful to the baby and you will have to inject yourself with insulin.
If you start eating healthily for your pregnancy (ie Fresh fruit & veg, lean meats and NO junk food and soft drinks), I think you will find the weight will drop off even as your tummy grows with the baby. Eating proper healthy foods is not called being on a diet – it’s called looking after yourself (and in your case your baby too)
As for retaining fluid, I do not know how you can lose that whilst pregnant. I was about 120 pounds before getting pregnant and held a lot of fluid, after I had my boy, it all disappeared though naturally.
Speak to your doctor about the fluid part – because that can also be a symptom of pre-eclampsia.

Well, honestly, you should have tried to lose weight before the pregnancy because you are right, its unhealthy for you and the baby. But, now that your pregnant, you shouldn’t do anything to try to lose weight except the normal stuff, walking is always great for you…30 min a day. Also, don’t over eat just because you are pregnant. I suspect that you have been overeating to become over weight so just keep with the same portions, and maybe try to eat healthier for you and your baby. And, yes, it is ok to lose weight while pregnant if you are overwight, the baby will get the nutrition it needs as long as you are eating right, and take prenatal vitamins. I know a lot of women lose weight during the first trimester because they just can;t keep anything down.
**Didnt mean to be offensive, I’m chubby as well (150 before I got preg)….and, well, its bc I eat the wrong things… I was just guessing bc that most ppl’s problem….but now that you say that you only eat once a day, it could be a slow metabolism. Once you start only eating a little bit your metabolism slows down and it can become impossible to lose weight. Your body thinks youre starving so it starts packing away the fat to survive and it becomes more efficient at using those precious calories that it gets (meaning it burns less calories). Anyways, Im sure you know that is unhealthy for you when your pregnant only to eat once a day….

I am 22 weeks pregnant, and really wanted to lose a little before gaining baby weight, but my doctor and most doctors will tell you NOT TO DIET AT ALL during pregnancy, seeing as how you are already high risk because of your weight, my answer would be no. Take care of yourself and worry about losing the weight later, I lost 13 pounds during the first 4 months of mine because of hyper-emesis…(severe morning sickness). Good luck to you, wishing you & your baby the best!

well The reason why women retain water is because they intake to much salt/sodium and because there isn’t enough water intake. You could safely lose weight by eating healthier. If you must have soda get diet,Use splenda instead of sugar. eat serving sizes and excercise. I walk 2 hours a week, drink diet soda and try not to eat for two. I just add more calories by adding cottage cheese or extra fruit vegis to my meals. I lost 10 pounds with 1st pregnancy, lost 25 with 2nd,and so far I have gained11 pounds this pregnancy I am 38 weeks prego. when I say I lost the pounds, I am talking about after the baby was born. about 2 weeks after birth I calculated the weight lost. Hope this makes sense and helps. Congrats on the desire to be healthy.

Eat healthier (no fast food. Period.) and walk around a lot. I wouldn’t go to a gym because that may be a bit *too* much strain on the baby, but definitely cut back on your food intake and eat fruit salads from like, Publix or wherever you shop for groceries.

It’s dangerous to try to lose weight while pregnant. You can eat healthy and work out moderately which might result in weight loss. You shouldn’t be tring to diet or anything.
